Regular Maintenance Can Expand the Life of Your Furnace

You don’t have to be an expert. That is our job! But as a homeowner, it is important to perform regular maintenance and upkeep on your furnace to allow it to perform at its peak for a longer lifespan.  These simple tasks, performed on a regular basis, can significantly help to keep your furnace issue-free and running at maximum capacity.

One of the easiest and most important tasks concerns the air filters.  By correctly installing and changing them regularly, the airflow is kept free from obstruction, and the efficiency of the furnace is maintained for a longer period of time.  Older systems have filters that can only block larger pieces of dust and particles, and does not adequately protect against the smaller substances, such as pollen, from circulating through the system.

Fortunately, new developments have been made and the high-efficiency filters out on the market today, provide that extra layer of protection from dust, pet dander, and other allergens in the air.  The fraction of cost increase is worth it to promote healthy air circulation in your home and for your family to breathe easily.

Proper maintenance to ensure that the high-efficiency filters are doing what they should is very important.  A routine of replacing the filter every three months is sufficient; however, someone with multiple pets, smokers, or allergies, may choose to replace more often.

Another simple maintenance task for the homeowner is to keep the area around the furnace clean and free of obstructions.  In order to function properly, the burner inside the gas furnace needs to have enough oxygen to burn, so nothing should be in the way to block the air circulation around the tank.  This is just a safe and more cost-effective solution.

Homeowners should also perform a yearly assessment on the furnace to make certain there is nothing visually wrong with the unit.  Check that wires have not come apart or become frazzled, that panels and pipes are still in good shape, and that nothing is damaged or needs repair.

These simple chores can help to keep your furnace running properly for years to come.
